Ingredients
To understand the benefit of the fresh frozen food diet prepared by A.A.2000 for your dog/cat, one must understand the function of each ingredient.
The following is the list of ingredients contained in our product. The ingredient followed by a star comes from a human grade source.
Animal source
The ingredients from animal source remain the most natural food source. The digestive track of the carnivorous animal is relatively short, this fact is well known. Therefore, animal protein and animal fat does transit quickly. Their digestion is concentrated within the stomach and the small intestine. For example, for a medium size dog, the meal remains about two hours in the stomach and only one hour within the small intestine. This is a very rapid process, and this is one reason why your pet will benefit from eating an easily digested meal. In addition, fresh frozen meat diets limit the risk of gastric torsion.
- Chicken*
- Horse meat*
- Bison meat*
- Horse liver
- Bison liver*
The chicken we buy comes from a factory under federal inspections. Every lot that we buy is constituted of rib cages, of backs with necks, or leg bones. Obviously, there is flesh over these bones. There is chicken in all our receipes. In our chicken receipes, we use chicken breast pieces left over from the production of tournedos as well as chicken hearts. These come from a factory that prepares food for human consumption.
Chicken plays a very important role in our complete diet for pets. In addition, to supplying a protein source, chicken is a good source of fat. It contributes in a large proportion to the energy requirement of your animal. Furthermore, a large proportion of these fats are unsaturated (60%). These unsaturated fats contain a fair amount of essential fatty acid like linoleic (22.3%) and arachidonic (between .5 and 1%). These fats are well known under the name of omega-6.
The chicken source which we use contains plenty of bones. Since the chicken is not cooked, these raw bones are not harmful for your pet. However, cooked bones are very difficult to digest. Serving a cooked bone to your animal increases the risk of digestive upset (perforation and intestinal blockage). For this reason, we highly recommend that you never cook our product not even defrosting in your micro-waves.
Bones are rich sources of minerals from animal sources, among which we could list calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, copper. We reinforce the utilisation of bones as calcium source rather than any other sources, since we wish to provide the top natural diet for your pet.
One of the first goals of utilizing horsemeat is to provide your pet with top quality protein. The biological value of this red meat is between 87 and 91 % depending on the source of reference. It is not surprising to notice that human athletes favour this source of protein along with eggs to build their muscles. Additionally, since the horse is not a ruminant animal, the fats accumulated in its body are slightly saturated. Therefore, horsemeat is our second source of essential fatty acid (omega-6).
Horsemeat is a rich source of iron and vitamin B-12. These nutrients will remain available to your dog since the meat is not cooked and the freezing process does not alter these parameters.
We are frequently asked to justify the use of horsemeat in our products. We ourselves own three horses and we understand the concern. We do respect the views and opinions of some of our clients. To satisfy these clients we have marketed a chicken receipe and two bison based receipes.
We developed our bison meat receipe after several clients, who are horse lovers, wanted a product that did not contain horsemeat. We are pleased to offer these products.
Bison meat contains four times less fat than beef. In fact, the percentage of polyunsaturated fat is higher than in beef which makes it a great source of Omega 3. Furthermore, bison meat is rich in iron, zinc, niacin, B6 vitamin and selenium. This kind of meat is good for human food too. It's recommended for people having heart and diabetic problems. To know more about the bison. Visit this website: http://www.bisoncenter.com
The liver is the part of the body which has the highest concentration of micro-nutrients, among those we could mention iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt, lithium and zinc. Therefore, the liver is very important to supply your dog with minerals from animal product. In addition, vitamins A and D accumulate in the liver. Horse liver is a very good source of protein of high biological value.
When your pet eats a prey, it consumes a small part of organs. This is why we think it’s important to include liver in every recipe. Just like horse liver, it's rich in vitamins and minerals. These nutriments being from animal sources, they are well digested by your pet.
Grains
Even though grains are not naturally eaten by the carnivorous animal, they play an important role in the diet of each dog. In fact, they will help the passage of the meal throughout the gastro-intestinal tract, exactly like feathers and fur when eaten.
Grains contain cellulose, a plant structure material hardly digested by the carnivore. This cellulose helps create volume within the digestive tract and prevents constipation.
Dogs have a hard time digesting raw starch. We utilize a slow cooking process which will insure that your dog will benefit from these cooked carbohydrates. Cooked carbohydrates are slightly digested in the small intestine and mainly transformed within the large intestine.
We limit the use of the grain in our dog`s diet since according to our philosophy, we wish to respect the fact that it is not natural for a dog to eat grains. Except for oats, all the other grains bear low protein content. This is an important factor in choosing grains, because we recognize that dogs get their protein requirements from animal sources rather than from plant sources.
Some of our clients prefer to feed their cat the natural way, without using any cereals in the food of their best friend. We have for them, a recipe that doesn't contain any cereal.
- Oatmeal
- Rice*
- Buckwheat*
- Wheat bran
Oatmeal is an important source of iron and copper. We also choose oatmeal since it is recognized as a plant bearing medicinal properties. It would appear that oat carries the ability to entertain the vital energy of the body. Those that eat oatmeal in the morning understand the benefit.
This grain bears very low protein content, one property we search for. The carbohydrates contained in this cereal are very simple and yet easily digested once cooked.
This plant belongs to the polygonacea family. This is a completely different family from most grain used by the industry. Buckwheat is known to be rich in lysine, an important amino acid and it also contains between 60 and 64% carbohydrates.
We do not cook wheat bran, it remains unaltered. We include this ingredient in our mix as a great source of fibre. It is also rich in manganese and choline (a vitamin from the B complex).
Vegetables and fruits
Even though any requirement program (NRC, AAFCO, ACMV) does not recommend the utilisation of fruits and vegetables within the diet of your pet, we believe that they play an important role. First of all, they contain very simple sugars, easily absorbed by the pet’s body. Secondly, they are rich in minerals, among which we could mention potassium.
In order to get the nutrients from vegetables and fruits, these must be finely grinded. This is one important reason we do utilise powdered dehydrated products (except for cranberry, we use pomace). Finely grinded vegetables are not easily seen by the human eye.
- Biological carrots*/beets*
- Alfalfa
- Cranberry/blueberry pomade
- Kelp
- Garlic*/spices
These two ingredients constitute the root vegetable of our product. Carrots and beets are rich in pectin, a simple sugar, readily absorbed. Carrots are rich in carotene, a product further transformed into vitamin A within the body.
It is very important to make the distinction between beet pulp and the beet vegetable that we do utilise. With beet pulp, the extraction process performed to extract the sugar left a product with much less sugar than the beet we do utilise. Don’t be afraid that this beet changes the coat of your black dog into a dull rust color. We do own black dogs and their fur is dark black.
Alfalfa is a forage plant. The product we buy contains the leaves and the stem of the plant. This alfalfa will contribute greatly to the fibre content of our fresh frozen diet. Many minerals and vitamins are contained in this alfalfa, and they all contribute to the overall health of your dog.
These products are the end product of the extraction process performed in order to produce their delicious juices. First, the fruits are slightly heated, and then enzymes are added to transform some sugars contained within the natural fruit. Once the juice is extracted from the fruit, the remaining product is called pomade. This is mainly composed of the skin, flesh and seed of the fruit.
We choose cranberry pomade over other types of fruit (apple, tomato) pomade, since few pesticides are sprayed during their growing season (only 2, 1 herbicide and 1 insecticide) as compared with more than 12 in orchard production. Another reason why we choose cranberry is because of its well known benefits with urinary tract infection, and we know many animals suffer from these type of infection. We hope our product could help these pets.
As for the blueberries, they are grown without chemicals and pesticides. Everyone knows of their anti-oxidant properties. Even though they color our products blue, we say that it is not important considering their value.
Kelp is an algae growing in the sea. What makes the use of algae interesting in nutrition is their incredible richness in micro-nutrients. Algae’s grow in an environment enriched with micro-nutrients. These micro-nutrients come from the slowly dissolving continent. Therefore, algae are as rich in minerals as the water that surrounds them. When comparing their growing situation to the land growing plants, one realises that terrestrial plants are restricted to the nutrient present in their root zone. Consequently, if one micro-nutrient is not available, the growing plant will lack that precise mineral. This is not true for algae.
Kelp is well known for its high concentration of iodine. Even though iodine in kelp is from a plant source (rather than an animal source), it is surely more available for the dog’s body than the calcium iodide, coming from a mineral source. In fact, kelp’s micro-nutrients are under an organic form and they are chelated. As you probably know, iodine plays an important role as it ensures the good functioning of the thyroid gland. Today’s reality is that more and more dogs have thyroid malfunction. We hope, this kelp in our receipe could help them.
Kelp is also rich in salt. It becomes our main source of salt since we do not add salt to our product.
We took the decision to include these ingredients in order to make our product more appetizing to your pet. Most commercial products have interesting odour. In opposition to this fact, raw meats are odourless (think of your uncooked chicken when you prepare it). Since the majority of your pet are used to these products, we know it will help adapt to a new diet if garlic and spice are added.
Garlic is well known for its medicinal properties. The component allicin which develops when garlic is cut is the key component to most of the health benefits. It is more probable that the powdered garlic that we utilise bears very little medicinal property. We invite you to add freshly chopped garlic before serving our product to your dog if you are expecting any therapeutic effects.
Oils
- Sunflower oil filtrate
- Cod liver oil
The oil filtrate is the product remaining in a barrel after cold pressed oil has been left for a certain decanting period. Let’s first have a look at what is exactly the definition of cold pressed oil.
The expression cold pressed oil means that the oil contained in the grain was mechanically extracted. Only grains rich in oil can be extracted that way. You will never be able to find cold pressed corn oil, since the oil content found in corn grain is not high enough to allow the industry to perform a mechanical extraction. In these precise cases, the oil contained in the grain is extracted using a heat treatment, often followed by a chemical extraction involving a solvent.
The mechanical extraction has the advantage of not altering the natural quality of the oil originally contained in the grain. But, this is true only if the mechanical extraction did not involve too much heat during the extraction process.
In fact, mechanical extraction required that the grain pass through an endless screw. This passage involves friction which creates heat. The harder the grain, the higher the friction, and the higher the temperature. The speed at which the endless screw is allowed to turn also bears an effect upon the heat. The higher the speed, the higher the temperature increases. This increase in temperature will be responsible for the oxidation of the oil, altering the quality.
Cold pressed oil is said to be pressed below a temperature of 50 Celsius. But, each grain has its own range of temperature. Sunflower for example, could be easily cold pressed at temperatures varying between 28 and 36 Celsius. But, this temperature could go up to as much as 50 Celsius, leading to a product of less quality. The company from which we buy the filtrate takes great care to press at temperature not exceeding 40 Celsius.
Once the oil is cold pressed, it is stored in a barrel where it stays for decantation. Finely grinded almond from the seed, along with finely grinded seed shell, all in suspension within the oil, slowly decant, and the oil on top of the barrel develops a clear aspect. At the bottom of the barrel, the oil is more viscous due the presence of seed particles and seed hull, it is black in color since the pigmentation of the seed hull is black.
This viscous product of a black coloration is called filtrate, and this is exactly what we buy. The only reason this product is not sold for human consumption, it is because of the time period involved to make it become a clear product (too long), as well as the filtration process that would make it too expensive to filtrate. In order to insure that this « black residue » could be used safely to feed your animal, we ask a laboratory to analyse it for the rancidity of the oil, along with the humidity and any pathogenic micro-organisms. All the parameters are excellent. This is an excellent product for your companion dog. Furthermore, this is much better than the recycled oil coming from the frying pan of a restaurant, which is unfit for animal consumption, even if the industry tries to make you believe the opposite.
The cold pressed sunflower filtrate is a rich source a vitamin E. In addition, this product is very rich in the essential linoleic fatty acid (omega-6). Therefore, we must reiterate the fact our product contains three different sources of linoleic fatty acid (chicken fat, horse fat, sunflower oil filtrate). Because of the presence of these good sources of fat, your animal’s coat will be wonderful, and this will simply reflect its overall health.
We do include this ingredient as a natural source of vitamins A and D. In addition, cod liver oil is a natural source of the fatty acid alpha-linoleic (omega-3). The cat, unlike the dog cannot produce Omega-3 from omega-6 oil. That is the main reason we add cod liver oil to our products. In order to keep its nutritional value, we keep the cod liver oil in the dark at a temperature below 0 Celsius.
Others ingredients
- Clay
- Beer yeast
- Vitamins
- Minerals
Clay is a mineral naturally occurring in soil. Its particularity is that clay minerals are negatively charged. For this reason, it acts like a small magnet. In the soil, clay mineral will absorb positively charged plant nutrients.
Almost all animals (poultry, cows, pigs) eat soil and your dog is no exception when it buries its raw bone in the garden. Eating soil is very natural and it will play an important role within the gastro-intestinal tract. That's why we include it in our diet. The clay mineral we include in our product is named zeolite. It's the type of clay we use, because there are many kinds.
Within your dog’s digestive tract, the clay mineral we include (zeolite) will act as a magnet, absorbing viruses, pathogenic bacteria, mycotoxins or simply an ammonia surplus. Adding clay mineral to the diet will also lengthen the time of transit of the ingested meal, giving more opportunity to absorb all the nutrients. This is very important in an animal such as the dog, which naturally has a very rapid digestion time.
This ingredient is in fact Saccharomyces cerevisiae specially raised in a sweet medium in order to make it multiply. The activity of the multiplication yeast produces metabolites among which all the vitamins from the B complex could be found (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, and choline). Vitamins A and E, as well as different enzymes are also produced. Different minerals are also found (manganese, copper, cobalt, iron, zinc, selenium). Yeast comes from the making of beer. In dregs beer, it's usually found in the bottom of the bottle. It is suggested to drink it too. Cultivated yeasts are another health promoting ingredient from a natural source.
We try to include ingredients that contain plenty of vitamins in their natural forms. For example, vitamin A is supplied by the following ingredients: horse liver, cod liver oil, cultivated yeast, carotene in carrots. But, in order to balance the vitamin content to the energy density of our diet, we do add some vitamin D, E and choline chloride (synthetic vitamin B).
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is not added through our vitamins and minerals mixture since freezing destroys this vitamin. In theory, all pets synthesize their vitamin C requirement and this vitamin plays an important role in the collagen formation (particularly important in bone development). But, in order to produce endogenous vitamin C, the pet’s liver must have access to glucose or galactose. Galactose is found in milk product (a good reason why breeder should let puppies nurse after their mother as long as possible). On the other hand, glucose is found in fruits and vegetables. You are welcome to add extra vitamin C, but you should know that excess vitamin C will be excreted through the urine, and this process might contribute to the formation of calcium oxalate uroliths in the urinary tract.
Before understanding what is written in this section, we ask you consult the list of ingredients used in the pet food you currently purchase.
Iron, zinc, selenium and copper are present in our vitamin and mineral mixture under the form of proteinate. It appears that proteinates are the most easily form of absorbed commercial minerals available. In fact, if you think about it, the best source of mineral for a dog will always be from unaltered animal sources (raw bones and organ meat).
But again, in order to balance for the energy density of our product, we must add some extra minerals. According to the supplier, iron proteinate is absorbed at a rate of 88 % as compared to iron sulphate (7,8%) and iron oxide (6,1%). The zinc proteinate is absorbed at a rate of 88% as compared to 20 % for zinc oxide. Finally, copper proteinate is absorbed at 35% as compared to 11% for copper oxide and 8% for copper sulphate. What source of minerals does your dog’s current daily diet contain?
We do add a selenium proteinate rather than the commonly use sodium selenite. This form of selenium has been made by Pancosma (you can visit their web site : www.pancosma.com to know more about the subject). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is keeping an eye on sodium selenite since it is recognized as potentially harmful for the health. In Japan, the use of sodium selenite is prohibited. In the States, this form of selenium is allowed under restricted conditions. We are not waiting after a control organisation to ask us to remove this ingredient from our pet food product, we are doing so by respect for your pet.
Calcium iodide completes our mineral mixture. It is the sole mineral source that we add which is from traditional mineral source.
